With the release of the In Plain Sight report last year, and with the heartbreaking news of the remains of 215 children discovered at the Kamloops Indian Residential School, we are reminded again and again of the damaging impact of racism and colonialism on the Indigenous communities, and on our Indigenous colleagues and patients. Injustice and inequities continue to be rampant in our society and in our health care system.
As settlers, one of the first steps we can take in our commitment to anti-racism is to learn about the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada, and to listen to our Indigenous colleagues, partners, and patients. We are grateful that three local and national Indigenous physician leaders have agreed to spend an evening on June 21 to share their personal and professional journeys and experiences.
