The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) has undertaken an initiative referred to as the Outcomes in Training Project (OTP) which involves modifications to the training of Family Medicine Residents across Canada.
Detailed information can be found on the CFPC website.
In 2018 the CFPC commissioned the Outcomes of Training Project (OTP) as a critical review of family medicine residency training during dynamically changing times and challenges to the discipline. The purpose was to clarify the intended goals and outcomes of training, and to determine if and how training could evolve to meet societal needs. The project takes place in two stages with phase one focused on analysis and recommendations (now complete).
On November 8, 2023, after the member-proposed motion ‘review and suspension of 3rd year family practice residency implementation’ was approved, the CFPC announced that they were “ceasing the implementation of the third year in family medicine residency training”.
