Equity
We understand that achieving optimal health outcomes requires addressing the systemic barriers that prevent Indigenous people, people of colour, and other marginalized groups from accessing the same quality of care available to all Canadians.
Addressing systemic barriers to create healthier communities
BCCFP is committed to advancing equity through our practice, advocacy, and member support. We centre equity in our work because we know that when systemic barriers are removed, it ripples through entire communities and ensures their success and growth.
Anti-Racism
Indigenous people and people of colour face systemic inequities in social inclusion, personal health, and access to quality health and social services. Indigenous women 15 years and older are 3.5 times more likely to experience violence than non-Indigenous women, a critical health care issue requiring immediate attention.
Family physicians cannot treat patients' immediate health concerns without understanding and addressing the underlying social and economic factors that create poor health outcomes. Health care professionals must eliminate systemic barriers that prevent equitable access to care, including confronting our own biases.
BCCFP promotes anti-racism and cultural safety and humility in family medicine practice. We provide resources on health equity and cultural safety on our website and urge members to actively integrate these principles into their practice.
Our anti-racism efforts are ongoing, and we remain committed to identifying immediate and long-term actions that advance equity for all patients.
Indigenous History Month
National Indigenous History Month, celebrated every June, provides family physicians with an opportunity to deepen understanding of the unique health challenges faced by Indigenous communities and the historical contexts that shape these challenges.
Visit the Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada website for information on recognizing and supporting Indigenous History Month.
Gender Equity
BCCFP champions gender equity in health care delivery and within the family medicine profession. We advocate for comprehensive, gender-affirming care that recognizes the diverse health needs of all patients while supporting family physicians in providing culturally safe, inclusive care.
We are committed to advancing gender equity through our advocacy, resources, and member support, ensuring that all patients receive respectful, comprehensive care regardless of their gender identity or expression.
