We met with Alex MacDonald, Senior Ministerial Advisor to the Minister of Health, on Wednesday to let government know about the unique role and value of family physicians in British Columbia.

BCCFP President Dr. Marjorie Docherty and Executive Director Toby Achtman presented our new one-page handout, The Unique Value of Family Physicianswhich highlights evidence that relationship-based, comprehensive, longitudinal care from a family physician:

  • is valued and wanted by British Columbians
  • leads to better overall health outcomes
  • results in lower overall costs to the health system

We also told the Ministry of our concerns about the increasing commercialization of episodic virtual care in BC.

The meeting has opened up further opportunities for dialogue with the Ministry of Health on the crucial role of the specialty of family medicine in the delivery of primary care.
