The Perinatal Services BC has introduced a new Biliary Atresia home screening program.

Biliary atresia, a rare but serious newborn liver disease, presents in the first few weeks of life with pale stools and an obstructive type jaundice. Early diagnosis and timely treatment is key to survival. At discharge from maternity, parents are given a “stool colour card” showing a photo series of 6 abnormal and 3 normal stool colours and they are asked to check their baby’s stool colour every day for the first month after birth.

If any of your neonates have pale stools and persistent jaundice beyond two weeks of age, please order a bilirubin test.
