The COVID-19 pandemic initially focused our attention on the pressure Canadian hospitals would face caring for acutely ill patients with COVID-19. We are now keenly aware of the unprecedented and tragic effect COVID-19 is having in Canadian long-term care facilities. The deaths of residents in long-term care homes now account for approximately half of the overall deaths from COVID-19.
Canadian family physicians are currently on the front lines fighting to contain outbreaks in long-term care homes. The challenges encountered in this setting are tremendous and include managing with significant shortages of workers and PPE; protecting residents and staff during a COVID-19 outbreak; and dealing with the emotional impact of social isolation among residents.
The webinar panel includes Dr. Althea Hayden (family physician and Medical Health Officer, British Columbia), Dr. Elise Levinoff (geriatrician/internist and consultant at CHSLD Jewish Eldercare Centre, Quebec), and Dr. Andrea Moser (family physician at Baycrest Geriatric Health Sciences, Ontario). Along with host Dr. Allan Grill of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), the panel will discuss the impact of COVID-19 in long-term care homes, the institutional level initiatives and strategies being implemented, and the management of elderly patients.
This session will include time for questions and will be useful for all family doctors caring for elderly patients. This session will be available in English only.
