The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) is celebrating excellence in family medicine teaching as we mark the 40th anniversary of the Section of Teachers (SOT). We are showing our gratitude to all teachers, preceptors, and educational leaders through a year full of events honouring these important roles, starting with a special dinner and party on November 15, 2018, at Family Medicine Forum (FMF) in Toronto, Ontario. You may purchase your tickets as part of your registration or separately through the FMF registration portal.
Did you know the CFPC has developed many resources for family medicine teachers and preceptors, including the Faculty Development Education Committee’s resource repository? The repository includes a link to the Fundamental Teaching Activities (FTA) Framework and highlights articles and teaching tools for each of the FTA domains. Educational resources developed by CFPC committees—such as Collaborating to Improve Care: A Practical Guide for Family Medicine Teachers and Learners, the Guide to Periodic Reviews in Family Medicine, and the Triple C Competency-based Based Curriculum Toolkit—are also available online. Watch for new members-only offerings, including webinars, coming soon!
If you want to connect with other teachers, preceptors, and educational leaders please join our community building and networking events at FMF. This year we have:
- A new session on Wednesday for teachers and preceptors following the keynote
- Our annual Knowledge Café with networking tables on various teaching topics at lunch on Wednesday
- Peer consults on Wednesday afternoon where you can discuss your teaching, preceptorship, and medical education leadership challenges
- A Fireside Chat featuring an “Ask Me Anything” session with the CFPC’s educational leaders
- A celebratory dinner and party on Thursday evening at the Carlu featuring entertainment
- Our Teachers and Preceptors Town Hall on Friday, where you can make your voice heard
Details about these events and all the FMF educational sessions and workshops will be shared in a special SOT fall communiqué.
If you are interested in medical education scholarship the Teaching Moment section of Canadian Family Physician is for you. It is published quarterly and you can submit your article online. Be sure to review past Teaching Moments for helpful info you can use to enhance your teaching practice. This year we introduced a new Scholarly Work in Family Medicine Education Grant, which supports academic and community-based family physician CFPC members in leading projects in medical education that advance the disciple of family medicine. Be sure to submit your applications when the call for proposals opens in December. Also, please consider supporting important work in family medicine education by donating to the Foundation for Advancing Family Medicine.
