Physicians who care for patients with dementia in residential or community settings are invited to
a free workshop to learn about P.I.E.C.E.S.™ – a care model for those who have the behavioural and
psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), which is being introduced into all care homes in BC.
The workshop is hosted by the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council as part of their support for
CLeAR – the Call for Less Antipsychotics for Residential Care that has supported 85 care homes
across British Columbia to reduce antipsychotic use through evidence-based management of the
behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia. By the end of the training, physicians will be able to:
– Carry out their role as part of the inter-professional team with respect to P.I.E.C.E.S.™
assessment of dementia-related responsive behaviours in older adults;
– Utilize the P.I.E.C.E.S.™ three question approach in assessment and intervention planning for
dementia-related responsive behaviours;
– Use the BC Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) interactive web-based
algorithm to provide assessment and treatment for dementia-related responsive behaviours;
– Appropriately prescribe medication in the treatment of specific dementia-related responsive
This workshop is eligible for up to 3.75 Mainpro M1 credits of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and up to 3.75 Maintenance of Certification Section 1 credits of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Travel expenses up to $500 will be reimbursed by the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council. Participants
will receive one hour sessional compensation (current PMA rate) to also participate in a discussion about priorities and opportunities for quality improvement work in residential care.
