BC COLLEGE OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS:Improving our practice to benefit yours

A lot has changed since we started out 60 years ago

Family physicians have always been the cornerstone of primary care in BC, but our patients and the health care system have changed significantly over the past six decades. The BC College of Family Physicians supports the profession by providing up-to-date continuing education resources tailored to the needs of family physicians, as well as advocating for family medicine within BC's evolving health care system.

That’s why we’re improving our practice to benefit yours

155 members in 1954

4600+ members in 2016

We make changes to our practice based on input from our members. Asking members about important topics, such as their continuing education preferences, where we need to focus our advocacy work and how best to communicate with them, helps us to improve our practice and services.

Better support, no matter where you are in your career

We recognize that when it comes to education and professional support, one size does not fit all. For example, family physicians in their first five years of practice have very different needs from a physician with 20 years' experience. We are working hard to provide formal programs and informal networking supports tailored to the needs of family physicians at different stages of their careers, as well as for medical students and residents.

Advocating for the Patient’s Medical Home in BC

The Patient’s Medical Home (PMH) articulates a vision for patient-centred, team-based family medicine. It is endorsed and supported by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). As BC moves toward a primary care home model, we will use this expertise to help our government and professional partners support this model of care.

Increasing connections with a digital strategy for lifelong learning

We are building a strategy to expand our offering of high-quality, topical continuing medical education without sponsorship from industry or pharmaceuticals. We recently launched a member-only section of our website to provide improved access to self-learning activities.

Listening to our patients: My Family Doctor Award

The My Family Doctor Award empowers patients to recognize the outstanding care provided by BC's family doctors. This award and our peer-nominated awards also help us to communicate the breadth of our work and highlight the value of family medicine.

Moving the BC College of Family Physicians forward

We move forward by listening to our members and tailoring what we do to meet their needs. If you are a member, stay in touch. Tell us how we can change or improve our services. Drop us a line or call our office to find out about current opportunities to join the Board, committees or special interest groups.

As the profession of family medicine evolves, we will provide excellent resources and support for family physicians. We are committed to continuous quality improvement and seek your valued input for moving us forward.
